Institutional Review Board and the Local Review Research Committee
At John George Psychiatric Hospital (JGPH), the integrity of our clinical research is maintained through a rigorous, multi-layered oversight process.
At John George Psychiatric Hospital (JGPH), the integrity of our clinical research is maintained through a rigorous, multi-layered oversight process. Every study conducted within our walls must first be approved and continuously monitored by two distinct bodies to ensure patient safety, legal compliance, and ethical excellence.
1. Institutional Review Board (IRB)
The IRB serves as the primary ethical “watchdog” for all research involving human subjects at JGPH. Its fundamental mission is to protect the rights, welfare, and privacy of our patients.
Ethical Review: The board evaluates the risk-to-benefit ratio of every proposed study, ensuring that any potential risks to participants are minimized and reasonable.
Informed Consent: The IRB strictly audits the “Informed Choice” process, ensuring that participants receive comprehensive, transparent data regarding the goals and potential outcomes of a study before joining.
Regulatory Compliance: The board ensures all research meets federal and international safety standards, providing legal security for both the investigators and the institution.
Ongoing Monitoring: Research does not end at approval; the IRB performs periodic reviews to ensure the study remains safe and compliant throughout its duration.

2. Local Review Research Committee (LRRC)
While the IRB focuses on ethics, the Local Review Research Committee focuses on the practical and clinical integration of research within the specific environment of JGPH.
Clinical Feasibility: The LRRC determines if a study is practical to execute within our current hospital workflows without disrupting standard patient care.
Resource Allocation: The committee assesses whether the hospital has the necessary staffing, equipment, and facilities to support the proposed research.
Strategic Alignment: They ensure that research projects align with JGPH’s focus areas, such as Treatment-Resistant Depression, Early Intervention in Psychosis, and Integrated Care Models.
Patient Impact: The committee evaluates how the research might impact the daily lives of patients on the wards, ensuring that the hospital’s therapeutic environment is preserved.
Summary of Oversight
Before a researcher can begin a study at JGPH, they must successfully navigate both committees:
| Feature | Institutional Review Board (IRB) | Local Review Research Committee (LRRC) |
| Primary Focus | Ethical protection and patient rights   | Clinical feasibility and hospital impact   |
| Key Concern | “Is this study safe and ethical?” Â Â | “Can this study be done effectively at JGPH?” Â Â |
| Mandate | Strict adherence to safety and privacy laws   | Alignment with hospital goals and resources   |
This dual-oversight model ensures that JGPH remains a leader in pioneering psychiatry while never compromising the high standards of care our patients deserve.
